History
The Sacred Dagadusheth Halwai Ganapati Temple is one of the most famous Shrines of Lord Shree Ganesha in Maharashtra. It was built in the late 19th century by a sweet maker (Halwai) named Dagadusheth Gadve, who was a successful trader and philanthropist in Pune.
After the tragic loss of his son to the plague epidemic, Dagadusheth and his wife were consoled by their Guru, who advised them to build a Temple dedicated to Lord Shree Ganesha. With deep devotion, they established the magnificent Idol of Lord Shree Ganesha, which soon became the spiritual heart of Pune.
The Temple gained immense prominence when freedom fighter Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak initiated the Ganesh Utsav celebrations here, using the festival as a means to bring people together during India’s freedom struggle.
Today, the Temple is known worldwide for its grandeur, daily rituals, and the belief that Lord Shree Ganesha here listens to every devotee’s prayers and fulfills their wishes. The Idol is adorned with nearly 8 kilograms of gold ornaments, making it not only divine but also visually resplendent.
